Lazdijai regional Museum

The first museum in Dzūkija in Lazdijai was founded in 1924 by Motiejus Gustaitis (director of Gymnasium, priest and educator in the premises of Žiburys Gymnasium.

In 1936, after the Gymnasium became state-owned, the museum was abandoned.

From 1974 the building of former Gymnasium hosted the Museum of a famous Lithuanian poetess Salomėja Nėris.

In 1995, after renovation of the big Žiburys Gymnasium building, Lazdijai History, Culture and Education Museum was founded here.

In 2004, following the resolution of Lazdijai Region Board, the museum was renamed into Lazdijai Regional Museum. It covers five divisions.

In former Žiburys Gymnasium in Lazdijai region, museum is established for poetess Salomėja Nėris (1904–1945) memorial. Poetess came to Lazdijai as “exile of love” and worked here from 1928 till 1931. She was teaching German language in gymnasium. She lived in a room which looked like coffin. In Lazdijai Salomėja Nėris wrote poem collection called “Footmark in sand“.

Lazdijai education history – exposition dedicated to top educationists of Lazdijai region, former Žiburys Gymnasium schoolchildren, poets, scientists, important cultural personages. In here you can see different age course books, teaching programs, didactic material. In exposition “Old gymnasium schoolroom” visitors can learn education history. There you can familiarise with old schooling tools, sit in old school desks, test your writing skills with goose-quill pen.

The museum exhibition halls host exhibitions of artworks, folk art, regional studies, musical and literature celebrations.

 

Memorial house-museum of Motiejus Gustaitis

During 1924 – 1927 this house was living place for the Dzūkija region educator Motiejus Gustaitis. He was priest, poet, originator of symbolism, writer, musician and linguist, translator from Latin, French, Polish, Russian, German languages, pedagogue, Doctor of Philosophy, the author of the first tutorial “Stilistika”.

Homestead-museum of Pranas Dzūkas

Homestead-museum of Pranas Dzūkas in 1970 was founded by Algirdas Savulis, the chairman of former kolkhoz Jaunoji Gvardija. At that time extensive melioration works were taking place in Lazdijai region – families from remote villages and steadings were being relocated to kolkhoz settlements. Then the chairman decided to leave one rather typical regional homestead of that time and to collect the exposition of ancient household items, furniture, tools, by preserving the authentic Dzūkian lifestyle. Currently over 550 ethnographic exhibits are collected here.

The homestead consists of house, barn, stockyard, old cow-house and smithy. The exposition reflects authentic Dzūkian lifestyle in the beginning of XXth century.

Every summer in homestead for 7 days is held ethnographic children camp. During that time kids familiarize with old Dzūkian crafts, cooking heritage, herbs. Kids are taught to throw and burn clay jars. They sing old-time songs and games.

 

Museum of Struggles for Freedom

The museum was founded in 1992 by the incentive of Lazdijai local people. The founders of the museum are J. Sandienė, J. Verseckas, L. Viršila, Z. Urbonaitė and the other region deportees, state prisoners and participants of movement Sąjūdis. On the 4th of March, 1994, the Museum was opened as the division of Lazdijai Region Municipality department of Culture and named Museum of Struggles for Freedom “Along the path of blood”. In 2004 the museum became a division of Lazdijai Region Museum and was renamed.

The history of resistance fights on 1944-1953, deportation and imprisonment is well reflected by documents, memoirs, photographs of state prisoners, their personal items, audio and video material.

 

Kapčiamiestis Emilija Pliaterytė Museum 

Museum was founded in 1984.

In 2006 museum was merged with Lazdijai region Museum and was named Kapčiamiestis Emilija Pliaterytė Museum.

Museum consist of three room which are fill of information about Kapčiamiestis region enlightened people (compositor Č. Sasnauskas, artist M. Bulakas, folksinger V. Povilionienė), leader of rebellion Emilija Pliaterytė in 1831 – Lithuanian Joan of Arc.

She died near Kapčiamiestis in 1831 while retreating with rebellion to Prussia.

Poems written in Polish, English, German, French and Italian languages were dedicated to her.

In this museum you will get to know with Kapčiamiestis history, exile and resistance, school history, traditional culture of the region.

 

Veisiejai regional museum

The museum was founded on 16th February 1998 by the incentive of Veisiejai secondary school pedagogues. This exposition is dedicated to the most prominent figures of Veisiejai region (part of exhibition is dedicated to the inventor of Esperanto Ludvic Lazarus Zamenhof). The significant part of exposition presents life and activity of Veisiejai organist, composer Juozas Neimontas, history of state prisoners, deportees, partisans, Veisiejai school.
