For the second year in a row, we are contributing to the DUOday initiative together with the Lazdijas Social Services Center and the social employment agency SOPA. DUOday not only encourages people with disabilities to try the usual tasks of employees, but also gives institutions and organizations the opportunity to better understand the professional abilities and talents of people with disabilities. It's a one-day initiative that creates unprecedented change! DUO is Latin for TWO. Today at the Lazdijai tourism information center in Janaslav village. 10, Lazdija district. Darius Jankauskas spent the day with us. Here he got acquainted with the main activities of Lazdija TIC, publications, and performed the assigned tasks. He also prepared a text dedicated to the mound of Rudamina and King Mindaugas, you can read it here:
Traditionally accepted, the coronation day of Mindaugas is considered to be July 6, which is basically also considered the birthday of the state of Lithuania. In the history of Lithuania, the personality of the Lithuanian king Mindaugas, his merits as a ruler to the state of Lithuania are very often discussed. There is much debate about the place and exact date of his coronation. Where was his capital, in which place he was crowned, in which castle he lived, what kind of personality he really was, etc
Some historians believe that King Mindaugas of Lithuania was born in the castle of Ringauds, Duke of Lithuania and Sūduva, in Rudamina (in the territory of today's Lazdija district. The last records of the construction of the castle can be found in the records of 1240 and it was called after Mindaugas' father Ringauds, which was blown up by the Crusaders with the help of gunpowder bombs in 1381. Since the castle is named after the ruler of Lithuania and Sūduva, and the newly built castle was built in 1240, the question naturally arises that the castle could have stood here when Mindaugas' father was alive and that Ringaud could have ruled from here. Lithuania and Sūduva (1214-1219) After the division of Lithuania by Dausprung, who ruled northern Lithuania (1219-1236), Mindaugas became the duke of Naugarduk in 1230 -1236) ruled the land of Southern Lithuania, Sūduva and Naugardukas and resided in Rudamina Castle, which may have determined the fact that after the death of his brother Dausprung in 1236, Mindaugas (1251) decided to crown himself the king of all Lithuania in the Ringaud castle built in Rudamina.
Today, the Rudamina mound plays the role of a recreational attraction. The Rudamina castle, named after Ringaud, which stood here before, no longer exists, only a mound with a height of 198 m remains. width 60 m length 83 m.
Thank you Darius for spending time with us!
