In the Kalniškė forest, in this place, on May 16-17, 1945, one of the largest battles between Lithuanian partisans and Soviet occupiers took place. About 100-120 partisans, led by Jonas Neifalta-Lakūnas, fought to surround the significantly larger forces of the 220th Border Regiment of the NKVD army and broke out of the encirclement. Several hundred enemies were killed, many of them were wounded. More than 40 partisans from Dainava district were killed (according to operational documents - 62). At the site of the battles, on the hill, a monument was unveiled on May 13, 1991, but it was blown up by hostile individuals on May 21, 1991, and rebuilt on May 29, 1991, by Jurgis Nevulis. Every year, the hill is supplemented with new crosses dedicated to the memory of Lithuanian partisans. You can find more information about the fallen partisans in the freedom struggle section here.
